By Don Clark, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal

New U.S. legislation that sharply boosts visa fees to pay for tighter border security may play well in some parts of the country, but the applause is faint in Silicon Valley.
The measure, signed into law by President Barack Obama on Friday, is expected to raise operating costs for outsourcing firms that use large numbers of foreign-born employees to serve their U.S. customers. But the biggest impact, critics say, is to increase the perception that America is becoming more protectionist and hostile toward foreigners.
“It’s adding to the negativity about America,” said Vivek Wadhwa, a visiting scholar at the University of California and research associate at Duke University who studies immigration issues. “The money raised is insignificant and the damage is huge.”

Of the seemingly countless variants of the Galaxy S that Samsung’s in the process of deploying around the globe, one stands out in a couple very unique (and important) ways: Sprint’s Epic 4G. The Epic hangs on to a couple of the Galaxy line’s most important characteristics — namely the 1GHz Hummingbird processor and the 4-inch Super AMOLED display — but adds in a sliding landscape QWERTY keyboard, support for the wickedly fast WiMAX network that Sprint shares with partner Clearwire, and a handful of other notable one-off customizations.

We’ve already taken a look at two of the other US-bound Galaxy S models — AT&T’s Captivate and T-Mobile’s Vibrant — but it shouldn’t take more than a quick glance at the Epic to tell you that this is a very, very different beast. Becoming just the second WiMAX phone released in the States (and the first with a physical keyboard), this is a pretty critical release for Sprint at a time when its subscriber count is just starting to pick up after several quarters of decline — and making things even more interesting is the fact that Sprint’s first WiMAX handset — HTC’s EVO 4G — is simply one of the best phones we’ve ever reviewed. In other words, yeah, you could say that the Epic’s got a lot to live up to. Is it up to the task? Let’s find out.

It’s a great time in a phone user’s life when they receive a major software update. I remember eagerly awaiting the eclair update for my trusty ol’ HTC Hero.

I also remember the frustration of seeing so many other phones getting the software bump, while I was left in the cold.

You HTC Incredible owners out there are probably feeling a bit like this right now (unless, of course, you grabbed that leaked version). I feel your pain, but I also offer remedy: Froyo should be coming your way this week.

Mashable claim that their magical mysterical (yes, I made that word up) anonymous sources are telling them that your Incredible phone should get the bump to the incredible Froyo come August 18th.

According to my advanced calculations, that’s this Wednesday. This aligns well with the “early August” estimates, we heard back in July, but, as we always say, don’t set your hopes too high: release dates for software updates are notoriously moveable.

A federal lawsuit filed last week alleges that Clearspring Technologies gathered private information on users via its ubiquitous AddThis widget, which is used on a wide variety of top web sites, Cnet reported.

The suit was filed in federal court in the central district of California by attorneys representing a group of minors and their parents. It alleges that software firm Clearspring, which creates widgets and offers a way to serve ads through the widgets, broke the law by spying on the web movements of users, including children.

The suit alleges that web site operators such as Disney, Playlist.com, SodaHead and others are using Clearspring Flash-based cookies that track users and their movements, not just on the web sites owned by the site operators, but also wherever they went online.

Cnet wasn’t able to reach representatives at Clearspring and Disney on Saturday. Warner Music Group declined comment. A similar lawsuit was filed last month against one of Clearspring’s rivals, Quantcast, as well as a bunch of Quantcast’s clients. The same law firms that filed the new suit — Parisi & Havens and the Law Office of Joseph Malley — filed the suit against Quantcast.

Privacy seems like it’s fast disappearing on the web, with a wide variety of controversies erupting in the past year at Google, Facebook, and many other sites. At some point, users are going to either get used to the idea that they have no privacy or they will just log off.

Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley reported that many of the web’s best-known sits are using Adobe’s Flash technology to surreptitiously gather data on users. Even when users try to remove traditional tracking code, known as cookies, the Flash cookies are not removed. The Berkeley researchers said that both Quantcast and Clearspring use Flash cookies and even reinstate cookies after users have deleted them.

The plaintiffs say that the data gathered on users was far reaching and followed users as they surfed the web. The data includes users’ video-viewing choices, geneder, age, race, number of children, education level, geographic information and household income, the suit alleges.

Don’t you just hate it when a company releases a product and it has problems right away? Samsung announced today that they are addressing the often discussed issue with the GPS on the Galaxy S, and that consumers should expect an update in September. This announcement came via Samsung’s Twitter stream, so we can only hope that Samsung is a little more accurate about their timelines then HTC has been.

Man, this is rich. Some two years after being sued by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, Premier Elections Solutions (formerly, and more infamously known as Diebold) has decided to settle up. Way back when, Brunner alleged that the outfit’s touch-screen voting machines weren’t acting as they should, and she pointed to an investigation that proved at least 11 counties were dropped in past elections when their memory cards were uploaded to servers. As of now, Premiere — which is owned by Election Systems & Software — has agreed to pony up just over $470,000 to the 47 counties that touched its e-voting hardware, but that’s hardly the kicker. Counties are also eligible for up to $2.4 million in free Premiere software for two years, and the company’s even throwing in up to 2,909 free voting machines along with a 50 percent coupon for maintenance fees. Right, because the Buckeye State is so anxious to start using the machines it found so faulty to begin with. Makes total sense.

Premier Elections Solutions pays up in Ohio Diebold suit, offers more faulty voting machines for free originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 14 Aug 2010 16:08:00 EDT.

VocalTec, the company behind the popular magicJack internet phone device, has an even more ambitious plan for delivering phone calls via the web: Making them free. The company is readying a new product, dubbed magicTalk, that will let users make completely free phone calls from their computers, smartphones, and iPads, reports the AP.

Users will get a phone number associated with the magicTalk software, and they’ll also be able to transfer their existing numbers to the service for a fee. MagicJack users will be able to do the same soon. The software will be available next week for Windows and Mac computers — with iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry versions to follow in September or October, according to VocalTec CEO Dan Borislow. The company is unsure if the smartphone apps will be restricted to WiFi, or if customers will be free to use the apps on 3G cellular networks.

There will be no time limits on calls, and users would only get charged if they try to make a call while outside the U.S. and Canada. VocalTec is able to keep the calls free because it operates as a phone company, and can subsequently charge other phone companies to connect to magicJack and magicTalk numbers.

But, as the AP points out, the new service likely won’t rake in as much as the widely advertised magicJack — a tiny device that plugs into a computer’s USB port, and allows regular phones to make calls routed over the internet. It costs $40, and comes with a year of unlimited calling in the U.S. and Canada (additional years cost $20). VocalTec is working on a standalone version of the magicJack that doesn’t require a computer to function.

MagicTalk would stand apart from competitors like Skype, which charges users to make calls to phone numbers, and Google Voice, which requires users to make calls from their own phones.

Earlier this year, the company also announced an ambitious wireless device that would allow users to route their cellphone calls over their home internet connects — saving cellphone minutes in the process. The device is now stalled, says Borislow, because it was forced to use low signal power levels to avoid legal issues on the use of wireless spectrum. The compromise also negatively affected the range and sound quality of the device, and the company is now looking to partner with a carrier to avoid the low signal power restriction.

In July, VocalTec merged with YMax, the company originally behind the magicJack. The combined company’s value is around $300 million, and this year it expects to earn between $110 million to $125 million in revenue.

As tipped by TechCrunch earlier this week, Google has snapped up Jambool, maker of the Social Gold platform, which allows social app and game developers to manage and monetize their virtual economies. The price wasn’t disclosed, but TechCrunch’s sources pegged it at $55 million plus $15 million to $20 million more in an earnout. The purchase comes just a week after Google confirmed it had bought social app and game outfit Slide.

The ongoing drama concerning government access to secure Blackberry communications is coming to a head in India, where RIM was given a final compliance date today. If a satisfactory agreement is not reached between the smartphone company and the Indian government, the latter will shut down the former’s email and messenger communications altogether, resulting in Blackberry users being reduced to internet and voice access.

RIM, predictably, has said it will not make any special deals, although if (as-yet unconfirmed) reports are true, that’s just what they did in Saudi Arabia. I don’t envy RIM, but this is one of the known risks of being a multinational corporation.
